CARPATHIA:
History of an Unsung Heroine

Everyone knows the Titanic, but history forgot the ship that saved it. The Carpathia Projects seeks to point the spotlight on the Carpathia's complete journey: from a vessel built in 1903 for the working class, then in 1912 heroically rescued by the world's wealthiest elite, then serving during WWI to transport soldiers, until she was torpedoed in 1918 and now sits on the ocean floor off the coast of Ireland.

THE CARPATHIA PROJECTS include:

  • Feature Film and the Companion Documentary

  • Expedition and the Expedition Documentary

  • Traveling Exhibits & Carpathia Museum (more information coming soon)

Coming soon—a full account of the history of the Carpathia written by Toni Kuran.

Built for the Masses (launched in May of 1903)

  • Democratic Luxury: Built for lower- and middle-class passengers, offering revolutionary third-class perks like running heat and ventilation.

  • The Carpathia's maiden voyage as the SS (Steamship) Carpathia took place on May 5, 1903, traveling from Liverpool to Boston and New York City. She became the RMS Carpathia when she began carrying mail and then rescued the passengers of the Titanic.

  • The Class Irony: A modest immigrant ship destined to become the sole sanctuary for the Gilded Age elite.

The Midnight Miracle (April 1912)

  • The Unsung Hero: Wireless operator Harold Cottam, whose alert ear caught the midnight SOS call just before closing his station.

  • Weaponizing Steam: Captain Arthur Rostron’s extreme decision to cut heating and divert all power, forcing a 14-knot ship to an unprecedented 17.5 knots through a deadly iceberg field.

  • Floating Triage: The systematic conversion of the vessel into a hospital, rigging cargo nets to hoist children and preparing three distinct medical bays.

  • The Leadership Contrast: Juxtaposing Rostron’s decisive heroism against the critical inaction of the nearby Californian and Mount Temple.

The Rescuers and the Titantic passengers

  • Highlights of the Carpathia crew and passengers that showed such generosity to the survivors of the Titanic, that not only were many displaced and put in physically difficult situations, but also the heroic stories of the passengers of the Titanic that survived.

War and Watery Grave (1914–1918)

  • Wartime Rebirth: She again changed function and became the HMT Carpathia during the First World War, when the Carpathia served as a military transport carrying thousands of American and Canadian soldiers to the front lines.

  • The Final Blow: Sunk in July 1918 after being torpedoed three times by German U-boat U-55, marked by the final, orderly heroics of Captain William Prothero.

The Modern Frontier

  • The 1999 Discovery: Clive Cussler’s historic expedition locating the ghost ship sitting perfectly upright 500 feet below the Atlantic.

  • Visual Climax: Partnering with maritime archaeologists to use cutting-edge 3D digital mapping, visually contrasting the intact Carpathia with the shattered ruins of the Titanic.
